Procedural Dermatology

Procedural dermatology is a specialized area of dermatology focused on the diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions through surgical, cosmetic, and minimally invasive procedures. These treatments are performed to diagnose skin diseases, remove benign and cancerous growths, treat precancerous lesions, improve skin health, and enhance cosmetic appearance.

Dermatologists receive extensive training in procedures involving the skin, hair, nails, and underlying soft tissues. Procedural dermatology encompasses a wide range of treatments, from simple skin biopsies and cryotherapy to advanced surgical techniques such as Mohs micrographic surgery for skin cancer.

Common procedural dermatology services include:

  • Skin biopsies for the diagnosis of rashes, growths, and skin cancers

  • Surgical excision of skin cancers, cysts, lipomas, and other benign growths

  • Mohs micrographic surgery for the treatment of certain skin cancers

  • Cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen treatment) for warts, precancerous lesions, and benign growths

  • Electrosurgery and curettage for selected skin lesions

  • Scar revision and repair of surgical wounds

  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) for actinic keratoses and certain skin conditions

  • Treatment of precancerous lesions and sun-damaged skin

  • Cosmetic procedures such as Botox®, dermal fillers, and laser treatments
